NOCTURNE SERIES BACKGROUND

The concept for the Nocturne events began in 2007 with the inaugural Smithfield Nocturne which attracted over 5000 spectators to central London and was awarded for its innovation winning a Visit London Sports Tourism Award.

The Nocturne format creates a cycling festival around a creative race programme which culminates with an evening elite criterium featuring British and international professional cyclists. The events are designed to fully exploit the locations they are held in and courses are chosen that provide a unique sporting attraction and a superb evening of entertainment.

In 2008 the Nocturne Series was created with a second edition of the Smithfield Nocturne and a new event in Salford Quays, the Salford Nocturne.

In 2009 the Smithfield Nocturne was joined by new events in Edinburgh and Blackpool with the Series attracting over 25000 spectators.

The series returned to Edinburgh and Blackpool in 2010 alongside the home event in London which was sponsored by Global Smartphone company HTC.

Since 2011 only the London event has been hosted and has been sponsored by IG Markets to become the IG London Nocturne. The event was broadcast on Sky Sports in 2011.
